I am looking to propose a wippen replacement on a no-name, tiny baby grand.  Currently, the rep spring cord loops are breaking, the flanges are Billings style.  Does anyone have experience to share about converting the wippen rail to standard flanges?  I am thinking to adapt WNG wippens to this action.  Aside from ensuring the spread and differential will work, and get me close to the magic line and a decent action ratio, what pitfalls may be lurking for me? I intend to propose new shanks and hammers that will give a strike weight appropriate to make the action nice and playable, which it currently is not.  The board, block and strings were replaced (decently,) though all original parts remain, other than poorly chosen new hammer weights and terrible tail shaping.

I could just replace the spring cord loops and wippen cushions, though I would much rather update the action with new wippens.

I would suggest you send a wippen to Brooks and let them come up with the best replacement.

If it is a no name piano why go through all of that work which is expensive and time consuming to put new WN&G parts in it. Brooks may be able to come up with whips that will work. New cords may be the best solution here

My experience is if the loops on the whips need replacing, so do the loops on the jacks if they have them. Not that bad a job once you get going.

These wippens have separate coil springs for the jacks.  I have considered replacing the cords, however, all the glue joints and bushings and hammer shanks and flanges are old and worn.  The were no problems with the cords that I was aware of until I started regulating the springs for adequate tension.  Perhaps this is why the tech who installed the hammers did not adjust the springs properly.  Many of the spring tensioning screws are already over-tightened and splitting the rep lever.

Can you post some pictures of the whippens showing the billings flanges and whippen rail as well as some hammers, shanks, flanges ?

    James,
The client has already invested heavily in the  piano with a new belly, custom painting.  It just has bad action work done. At first visit, I did not want to touch this action.  Over subsequent visits, I was starting to feel that I could offer some hope to what I initially regarded as a hopeless cause.  I have had similar experiences many times in this career.  I do not like to present client's pianos as unworthy of my time.  If I can offer something to improve the performance, either modestly, or incrementally, or even a grand overhaul, I will do this and let the client decide if it's in their budget.  If the client values my work, and compensates what I ask, it's good work in my opinion.  If I sense the client does not, or would not value my work, I walk away.

I am mostly curious to hear of any experiences with converting the Billings flange rail to standard flanges.  Unless there are any wippens available to pin the Billings style flanges to.  I have yet to locate any from supply houses.
