SAT IV Battery

The battery of my SAT IV is not holding it's charge. I used to be able to tune 15 - 20 pianos on one charge, but now it's down to 3 or 4. Did I read on this list that someone replaced the battery, but not from Inventronics? Please respond privately or on this list. Thanks.

Hi Wim:  Yes that was me, I had my batteries replaced at the local Bulbs & Batteries store a while back.  They did it in one day and charged me $35.  They are just AA rechargeable batteries soldered in place.

Sounds exactly like my old Norelco shaver. It lasted a very long time and I replaced it myself.

Sorry Mike, but that didn't work. I took it to a Battery + store and they said they are not AA rechargeable batteries. Not only that, they are soldered in place, and they can't fix it.

I'll send it to Inventronics in May.

I'm sorry this didn't work out for you.  I wonder if they opened it up and looked at what's inside?  Maybe this was the wrong store or the wrong person.  I opened my unit up (you can do the same) and saw first hand what I described.  And yes, they are soldered in but new batteries are installed by unsoldering the old ones and soldering in the new ones.

I have replaced the batteries myself in both of my SAT I's.  SAT II is the same.  They are usually the old NiCad batteries, AA size, 4 of them.  You can buy them as a "pack" shrink wrapped together.  It's possible to replace them with lithium rechargeable ones, but you'd have to charge them with a different charger.  The SAT III is not NiCad, I think they're lithium.  I don't know about the SAT IV, but all you'd have to do is unsolder them and take note of any markings on the batteries so you could find replacements.  If you send it in, there may be a substantial wait before you get it back.  Then there's the risk of voiding any warrantee that might still be available.  I guess it might be a good reason to dust off those aural skills!  PM me if you'd like to borrow my SAT III in the meantime.

    Paul

I got a message back from Paul S. The turn around time is about 6 weeks. I'm sending it tomorrow morning. I'm going to South Africa for 16 days in February, and since I'm only tuning part time, I won't miss it too, much. Yes, I will dust off the aural skills, but I'm a hybrid tuner anyway, so it should not be a problem. Thanks for the offer, but I'll be fine.

    Michael

I have an old SAT II (serial # 19) that's been sitting on the shelf for years.  I like it for very specific things it does well like directly measuring  intervals but it seems to have crashed. I've been thinking about sending it back to Paul but it seems to be a rather expensive proposition.  I've changed the battery in it myself too but I can't remember exactly what I did.  I seem to remember it was a very specialized small sealed lead acid battery.

Really? I loved those old SAT IIs  Tuned 1000's of pianos with one over the years.  It's like an old friend.  I'm sending it back to Paul tomorrow. He said he's gotten seriously behind but that's ok.  I have a half dozen other ones including the original dedicated Verituner. Later I got the software.  My fav right now is PianoScope.
