Edward, Google Piano Bass string making (or winding) and you will find several videos of people winding bass strings. They are interesting in general. On some you will see the winder take a file and run it along the entire length of the core to rough it up. In theory the improves the grip of the wound copper to the core wire.

Information I have is the core of the strings are roughed up at the ends to assure the winding will stay put, eliminating having to twist the strings.

Good day all, I'm restringing a 1915 Ellington, (by Baldwin), 5'4" grand. I'm looking at Mapes bass strings and see an option called, "shraffed." What is a shraffed bass string and is it worth the extra dollars over the usual suspects? Thanks in advance!
