A new colleague was looking at a Story and Clark console (circa 1962) and he tried to remove the knee board.  I tried to help him via text and he said he pushed up on the metal brace holding it in place, but he could not pull it out.  I had thought it might have swelled over time and has become wedged in place.  I don't remember if there is some sort of extra latch holding it in place.  He said there is just the one metal brace in the middle.  I tried to see if anyone had mentioned anything online, but no dice..therefore I thought to ask you all.

    Thanks

    Patrick

If push comes to shove, you can just unscrew the spring and remove it. Sometimes you can just remove one of the two screws and swivel it out of the way.

He might not be pushing up on the spring all the way. Just remove the spring and the board will come out.

I have run into pianos where there is not enough clearance between the spring and the kneeboard to pull the board forward. At that point, removing the spring is the easiest option. When the board is reinstalled, it need to be pushed into place and then the spring screwed back on.

Thanks guys!  Unscrewing the spring did the trick.  The knee board had been reinstalled after a tuning and had been jammed in instead of sitting in the groove properly.  Problem easily solved after I gave him your instructions.

If the bottom board is installed upside down, this can create this tightness.
