I want to share a comment one of my chapter members said at lunch the other day. On the last day of convention, all 7 of the Central Florida chapter in attendance at the convention met for lunch. I asked each one of them what class they enjoyed the most or got the most out of. All of them had a favorite or two, but one of the chapter members said, "none of them". She went on to say that she got the best tips and more information talking to other technicians between classes in the hallways, the elevators, in the exhibit hall, or at the bar.
This is what us seasoned convention attendees have been saying for years. More information is shared outside of class than in. I'm not advocating we don't have instructors teach classes. Far from it. But for all those members, and especially those who don't think they will learn anything from the instructors or the topics they teach, you're missing out on some of the best opportunities to learn. And isn't that what being a member is all about? We are members of PTG because we want to learn about our craft and become better technicians.
And this "accidental" education isn't just at the convention. This happens at every one-day seminar, at every weekend seminar, and at every chapter meeting.
