I service and maintain a Yamaha C3 Conservatory Grand that is in a small Chapel. It is in excellent condition thanks to a full Dampp Chaser system and Dawson String cover and as soon as our long hot humid summer lets up I will be doing some detailed action regulation to even out the feel of the action, rep spring strength, blow, letoff, drop backcheck height. In any event there is an annoying noise when the jacks hit the jack stop felt on every note. The previous owner was a teacher who probably subjected the piano to lots of different players and never had the time or money needed for regulation adjustments. I know that I can try needling the felts or turning the screw slightly but I rather do a better more lasting job. So my question is what is the best way to estimate the job and should I get new felts from Yamaha ? I never had much luck with fabric softener . If you listen closely to any grand action you will hear this sound that is due to felt compaction over time
