If anyone has one of these "beauty's" in their clientele I'd be interested to know if it has the spring cord issue that so many older Yamaha verticals have, or does it have a different action?

I’ve serviced a few of them in Hawaii, and yes, they have the spring loops that break.

All of the Yamaha spinets I have tuned where bought by members of the military when they where stationed in Okinawa or Japan. Myrtle Beach had an active Air Force Base and many retirees settled here. The pianos are well built and a like the Baldwin Acrosonics.I believe Schaff sells asian style flanges with the cord in place. Chances are you may need to do many broken loop repairs.

I'll second James' opinion that Yamaha spinets are well built and generally hold up well. (For spinets at least.) Even the local piano store will still sell them when they can find one.

And yes, they do have spring loops.

Thank you...yes I have seen about 3 of these in my 48 years in the business and also agree that they seemed pretty good. I simply could not recall about the spring cords, and advised the new client owner over the phone of an upcoming appt that there MIGHT be an issue here. I wanted to be "sure".

    Thx again

In my experience, the spinets predated the "silk loop" problem. But these pianos have extremely short keys and compressed actions so they are prone to sluggishness or repetition problems. Everything has to be just so.

    Update:

I tuned it today. This thing us from 1961 and looks like it came out of the showroom last week. It's in amazingly good condition. No spring cord problems...in fact no problems of any kind. Sounded great (except for A#0...weird and dead...but who cares down there)!
