Someone asked me the other day about the scrap value of the metals in a junk piano. I told him it would be next to impossible to get the copper off the bass strings, but does anyone know about how much a scrap metal yard would pay for the plate from a large upright? What does the plate weigh by itself anyway, maybe 250-300 pounds?

400 lbs would be a pretty big piano. I took in an aluminum frame out of a console, along with a bunch of other scrap and got $40 total. Paid me about $5/hr to get it all apart. :-p

You need to learn to work faster. You could have made $7.50.

    No kidding! :-)

It was a fun time with the kids though as they helped and I used the $40 to take them out for ice cream. So my net profit was even lower.

I always just bust up what I can, take the loose pieces and take the rest to the dump. I get maybe half that but it only takes me about an hour from start to finish (all tools put away). I love to swing that sledge hammer. Cathartic, if you know what I mean.

That might make a good Chapter fundraiser, get about 5 pianos together and
bring in a couple hundred bucks,

Jim - do you still have those pianos in the backyard?
