  • 1.  Are Yamaha C3 bass strings available off the shelf?

    Posted 04-05-2025 07:48

Locally I maintain a Yamaha C3 which for years had a missing bass string, Bb2 just below the break. I didn't do anything about it as the church don't have a budget, and the single string worked fine. Without telling me they got in a local tech . . . who replaced the single string rather than both . . . with predictable results.

The mismatch and inability to tune is finally getting to them. However they seem to find increasing enthusiasm for concerts, which is great, and so are now prioritising getting the strings replaced. The trouble is that leaving a single string whilst I take off the original and send it to be copied, will leave a very unmatched note to the rest, but of course I can take measurements on my next visit instead.

However, the C3 is such a standard instrument, can one simply obtain a replacement pair of strings for that note off the shelf?

    Best wishes

You don't say how old the piano is. Yes, a new string next to an old string is going have a different tone, and it will go out of tune for a while, but will replacing both strings going to have to the same tone as the rest of the bass strings, and also have tuning instability? Instead of getting two new strings, perhaps you should get the one new string to stay in tune better. Did you bend the strings at the bridge pins, hitch in and at the agraff? If anything, mute off the new string until it does stabilize.

Most string makers, if not all, have the scale for a C3, so no need to send the old string or bother to measure the old string.  There is more than one scale for a C3, so you'll need to give them the serial number.  If this piano was in a recording studio, I'd replace both strings to insure a good tone.  In a church where it doesn't matter so much, replacing the one string will be ok.  I don't think there will be much difference in the tone either way.  I don't know if Yamaha sells string replacements or will refer you to a string maker.

    Dear William

    Thanks so much

The new string which was put on by someone is a complete harmonic mismatch with the old and thus the reason to be replacing both at the same time. Any amount of jiggery pokery isn't going to change it. I think the new string might be very slightly thinner. I'd think the instrument is 20-30 years old. As a matter of curiosity legend has it that it was initially bought for Buckingham Palace and it has a Harrods plaque inside.

I haven't worked out tensions but always feel with the C3s that the notes just below the bass break are at a significantly high tension compared to others.

Next time I go I'll take note of the serial number.

If anyone's interested here it is in concert a few years back https://youtu.be/WKbq54Zf-OU

    David,

It has been my experience that no matter what, whoever makes the strings will want measurements adapted to their method of doing things. Gregor Heller has his own specialized tape measure as does Jsmes Arledge, etc. Gregor is closer to you than anyone here. I would discuss it with him.

    Dear Peter

Thanks so much - and yes that was my hunch also

I should have photographed the serial number also whilst I was there . . .

    Best wishes

If of assistance I'm told the serial number is B 2432378

I'm tuning it for a concert at the end of the week so will remove the original old string, but so much easier if a string maker can supply just with knowledge of the number!

    Best wishes

    David,

It's worth trying with Schaff, Mapes, or others, but in the end I suspect that they will require measurements (plus ideally it is best to replace both strings of a bichord usually) so that they are not faced with: "The string you sent me doesn't match properly" and have to do it again. If they in fact have historical data available for that model they will compare the data you send to the data they have and try their best to figure out the best thing to do.

    Dear Peter

    Many thanks

I'm going on Friday to retune bass and will take off the original string, leaving the horrid replacement at the moment, to send to a UK stringmaker who is convenient. For anyone else in the UK

The instrument is an abject lesson in not replacing just one string of a bicord!

    Best wishes
