    I tuned a sub 5' Sojin grand yesterday. It sounded ok for what it was, but had surprisingly little sustain. I often expect too much downbearing in cases like this, though I didn't check it directly. I did notice there was a cracked rib, which seems to be an indication that a downbearing issue may be present. Regardless, is there any repair for this kind of issue?

    Is the crack across the grain, like someone tried to snap it in half, or the length of the grain?

    Perpendicular to the grain, it looks more like a break than a crack. Hard to figure how that could happen after is was glued to the panel.

    could be due to overly aggressive drying schedule or defective lumber

    Just a guess, but i would say it was broken in the factory and they probably figured by gluing it, and sanding, that it would cosmetically disappear. But the downbearing over time, opened it up.

    If you can get a router in there, lower the profile a little, and put a "cap" across.
