Hello.  I recently saw a piano that originally had rubber head nails for bumper,  Someone replaced them with the mushroom style bumper and glued them on.  The customer said it was a long time ago.  Now those rubber bumpers have melted.  She said the piano never got hot, so I'm wondering if maybe the glue they used reacted chemically with the rubber.  This was the bumper glued to the lid prop.

It doesn't take a lot of heat to melt those rubber buttons, Just a lot of pressure over a long period of time, along with a little bit of heat. Was the piano sitting in a window?

Thank you.  I hadn't considered the pressure. It was a warm house.  Not in the sun, but that could be it.

Rubber turning into goo is well known on rollers on vintage tape recorders...

I've had the same thing just recently on a piano I sent to Mexico to be refinished.  They did a beautiful job, but now all of the buttons are melting, and I'm not at all sure what to do about it.
