    Hey everyone,
I went to tune a "rebuilt" ( in the 70s, at least restrung) 1924 Marshall & Wendell grand yesterday and found half the hammers to be blocking.

I tried to get it working but to no avail. Here's what I found: drop screws all very high, letoff screws all bottomed out. Keys maybe slightly low (just under 2.5 inches), dip at 3/8. I raised some sample hammers, but still no dice. Checked and reset the glides, lowered all drop screws. My only thought at this point is thicker letoff buttons. The letoff rail is firmly screwed to the brackets with machine screws, so I don't think rail position has changed.

The owner has no money, yet wants it functioning to sell TODAY! (Sometimes you step in the bear trap, and sometimes the bear trap sneaks up on you…). Another technician found the same issues back in 2006 but of course the owner didn't want to pay for work.

So here's my question: I think that at some point in the past, someone worked on the piano and did something to it, didn't know what messed things up, and gave up. Based on the evidence-especially bottomed out letoff-what are some possibilities for the elemental mistake? Mis-bored  hammers? Random wippens thrown in? The jacks, once adjusted, are about in line with knuckle cores. Springs not great, but ok.

    thanks!

Action spread may have been messed with.

Did it look like the h/s/f were replaced. I wonder if the wrong sized were put back on.
Since the owner wants to sell it, either take it, and make this a rebuild project for yourself, or call Ingrid and ask if it's worth her while to come get it for the same reason.

This era of Marshall & Wendell grand action bracket were (in some cases) made of pot metal, which becomes brittle over the decades and could easily have altered the action spread. Inspect them (and the spread) closely.

Is this by chance a Young Chang stencil piano?  Spreading action brackets is sure to be the issue.  Not sure if you can get free action brackets any more.  You'll have to replace those and regulate from scratch.  Nothing your client will want to hear.

    Folks,
He states that this piano was built in 1924 (back then they were made by Chickering) so it isn't a stencil piano and it's not likely bracket swelling-I'd have to check my 1931 version, but I think the brackets are iron.  Now, since it was rebuilt in the 1970s there is a very slight chance the rebuilder used new brackets, which would put them in the swelling brackets timeframe.

Did you check after-touch? You mentioned dip but not AT.

If AT OK, try adding felt to a let-off button with double-sided tape and see if things work.

There are a number of brands that had action bracket issues because of pot metal use. There are not Young Chang related but the problem is the same. I have an old journal article that I will try to find. I would check the action spread regardless since it is possible it was messed with, the brackets got loose etc. BTW sometimes brackets look okay . I believe you can get brackets from Schaff for some of these non Young Chang pianos.
