Getting ready to replace the donut grommets on a Baldwin spinet. I've avoided this type of job for long enough. Any tricks to install these without removing the screws? A technician friend recommended heating the grommets so they stretch over the head of the screw. I'm open to any and all recommendations.

     Thank you

Slit them as you do balance rail punchings.

Just tried the slitting thing. It's brilliant 😉 👍 Way to go Larry!

There are no screws. There are small plastic nuts that need to be taken off. A ratchet tuning tip fits on those nuts. Use a power screwdriver with an adaptor for the tuning tip to take the nut off and put it back on. It takes about 2 hours to do the whole set.

    HI Tim,

    Replacing Baldwin Abstract Grommets
Replacing hardened and/or crumbling grommets on metal Baldwin spinet abstracts is really easy and this method require minimal regulation.
    •    With the action still in the piano, use a hook to pull the lower hook of the abstract from the fork in the wippen.
    •    Remove the abstract, with the grommet in place, from the fork in the keytail.
    •    Slide the bushing loop off the hook then slide the old bushing off.
    •    Slide on a new bushing on the abstract then slide the bushing loop back onto the hook.
    •    Place the abstract grommet back into the fork in the keytail.
    •    Push the bottom hook of the abstract back into the wippen with the glued portion of the loop facing out.
    •    Repeat 87 more times.
    •    Vacuum up the mess from the old crumbled grommets.
    •    Adjust lost motion via the nylon nuts on top.
    •    Elapsed time: approximately 2 hours.
    •    Do any other work and bill for your time and parts.
    •    Notes:

    • Don't spin the nylon nuts off, especially with a cordless drill/driver since this loosens the threads and introduces regulation stability issues.
    • I sit in the floor on a kneeling pad to do most of this work.

    Alan

A very good description of how to replace the grommets, but there are two things with which I disagree.
    1. I don't think removing the plastic nut with a power driver has any effects on the threads. In all the years I've done this, I don't recall ever having to re-adjust lost motion many years later. I used to take the action home and do this work on the bench. But since I don't have a bench anymore and did the last set in the customer's home. The only problem I encountered was dropping the nuts. I was able to find three of the ones I dropped, but the fourth is somewhere in the action. (sigh).
    2. The second thing I disagree with is where you sit when you do this. I probably could have sat in front of the piano when I was younger, but sitting in that position would be very difficult considering the girth around my middle. But that's mostly my problem, not yours. lol. I sit on the bench in front of the piano, which made it much easier.

Neat, I had absolutely no idea they unhooked from the wippen like that.

Thank you all for the advice, I completed the job today.  I experimented with a couple methods explained here and ended up taking Larry's advice and slitting the grommet and orienting the slit toward the key. I was happy with the result and the customer was as well.
