There are no spatial variations of frequency: there are spatial variations of amplitude at different frequencies and thus different spatial perceptions of harmonics which will either be resonating in different places or not.

Spectral peaks correspond to soundboard eigenmodes excited by the string pulse. This clearly accounts for spatial variations in frequency.
